Opposition committee to meet JALPA

2010-02-22 09:15:49
The opposition committee examining the Jamaica Airline Pilots Association’s (JALPA) proposal to acquire Air Jamaica is expected to have its first meeting today.

The sub committee was appointed on Tuesday.

The Opposition spokesman on Transport, Robert Pickersgill, says the main objective of the group is to determine whether JALPA has enough money to buy and sustain the lovebird.

He says he’s convinced that the pilots’ business plan is worth considering.

JALPA has claimed that one of three overseas-based equity partners who have expressed interest in financing the operation of the airline is a member of the G7 group of countries.

However, the Government has rejected the pilot’s proposal, reiterating that it will only be considered if negotiations with the Trinidad-based Caribbean Airlines fail.

The Contractor General Greg Christie has said the government would be in violation of its contract award principles if it sets aside the public competitive tendering process to facilitate JALPA’s request.
